How it all began – The Fluminense Football Club

It was the year 1901 and the young Oscar Cox had returned from Switzerland where he not only studied but also developed a profound interest in football. After his arrival in Brazil he became the primary person responsible for the implementation of sporting programs in the country. On 1 August 1901, the first team formed by Oscar Cox and his teammates traveled to Niterói to play an English team. The most important event of these early days, however, occurred on 21 July 1902, when Cox, along with twenty other participants, founded the Fluminense Football Club at a meeting on 51 Rua Marquês de Abrantes, at that time the residence of Horácio da Costa Santos.

The name “Fluminense” came up naturally, without much debate or discord, despite the fact that the initial idea of naming the team the “Rio Football Club” was reconsidered. “Fluminense” ultimately prevailed, derived from the Latin flumen, or “river”.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts and entrepreneurial spirit of Oscar Cox, who implemented and popularized football, founded the Fluminense Football Club – the first in Brazil – the British sport became a passion among Brazilians. Since then Fluminense has maintained its role as the protagonist in Brazilian´s football, promoting the sport with important initiatives, such as the advocacy of benefit games.

The first game of the Fluminense Football Club was played on 19 October 1902 against the Rio Football Club on Payssandu field. The result? Well, suffice to say that it was a resounding victory: Fluminense 8, Rio 0. On 6 September 1903, a debut of interstate games were played, three games on the Velódromo field in São Paulo. The favored carioca team won two and tied one.

Enthusiasm for football was evidence by steadily increasing public support contributing significantly to the growth of new clubs, including what would be the beginning of games between Cariocas (natives of Rio) and Paulistas (natives of São Paulo). Years later, thanks to the generosity and leadership of the Tricolor (Fluminense players or fans, a name derived from the three colors of the current official team flag – see “Flags” below), the first draft of the Seleção Brasileira (“National Team”) was held. But this is another story…
